How Lee Hsien Loong, Lee Hsien Yang and Lee Wei Ling got their Chinese names

In view of the public spat between the three children of the late founding prime minister of Singapore, Mr Lee Kuan Yew (LKY), it is interesting to note how each of them was named respectively by their parents. There are many parenting lessons we can learn from LKY, among them, how to give your child a meaningful Chinese name.

This information was revealed in the eulogy by youngest son, Lee Hsien Yang at the cremation service of LKY:

“When Loong, Ling and I were born, Papa gave us only Chinese names, and in those days, there was no Hanyu Pinyin so he used the Wade Giles which was the prevailing system to spell the names. And as papa did not have a good commandment of Chinese and came from a Peranakan household, he sought the help from the court interpreter Mr Wong Chong Min in the choice of names. Two years ago, Loong while walking around in Queenstown met Mr Wong’s son, the man who had named the three of us.

The names parents choose for their children embody the hopes, aspirations and dreams they have for them. Chinese names in particular, with their many possible wonderful layers of meaning, allegory and poetry, lend themselves well to this.

For their eldest son, Papa and Mama chose the name 显龙 (Hsien Loong). It means “illustrious dragon”. It was an appropriate and auspicious name for a boy, especially one born in the year of the dragon.

For my sister they chose the name 玮玲 (Wei Ling), which means “the beautiful sound of tinkling jade”. I suppose Mama thought that that was an appropriate and feminine name for a daughter, thought I don’t think it in any way circumscribe Ling’s development!

For me, they chose the name 显扬 (Hsien Yang). Some people think that since I am called Yang, I must be born in the Year of the Goat. Actually it is several years before me, if I was born in the Year of the Goat, I would be 60 now.

The name 扬 which mean 赞扬 or 表扬 and indeed it has more literary origin. It was taken from (三字經). Though my mother used to tease me before I knew this and said, your name means that you are an “Illustrious show off”. Actually the phrase that it was taken from was 扬名声,显父母 which means to bring honour and glory to your parents.

I am sure many Singaporeans travelling abroad have often received compliments on Singapore and its transformation over the last fifty years. Usually the conversation also would acknowledge the contributions of Mr Lee Kuan Yew. I would nod in agreement and  but I would not  acknowledge my relationship and I just kept quiet, and say it’s been a remarkable journey. Unsolicited compliments like this are the most authentic and heartfelt. Keeping private my family connection only served to enhance the pleasure for me. Sadly, as I developed a more visible public profile, it became harder not to be recognized as Lee Hsien Yang and my father’s son.

I have taught my children never to mention or flaunt their relationship to their grandfather, that they needed to make their own way in the world only on their own merits and industry. I have suggested to them that should they be asked whether they are related to Lee Kuan Yew, that a good answer was to say my name is spelt “Li”. Mr Lee Kuan Yew’s name is spelt “Lee”. “Li” is one of the most common Chinese surnames in the world and given it’s a Chinese surname it is probably one of the more common surnames in the world. This response which I suggested was not meant to mislead or to obfuscate. It is born out of a desire to be recognised for who we are as individuals and not for who we are related to. We are immensely proud of Papa and his achievements, and yet perhaps it is part of our DNA to seek our own way in life. I am sure that Papa would not have wanted otherwise.”

Asia’s Largest Mirror Maze debuts in Singapore and Admission Cost is just from S$4

Asia’s largest mirror maze, Professor Crackitt’s Light Fantastic, debuted earlier in June at the Science Centre Singapore (SCS) as the venue celebrated it’s 40th anniversary.

The mirror maze is modelled after an eccentric scientist’s laboratory made up of 105 cells and 17 interactive experiments. The mirror images are so deceptive that many of the visitors end up walking round and round the same place and still cannot find the way out.

Don’t believe me? Watch this video:

Pictures taken inside the mirror maze:

Entrance to the maze is free with general admission tickets to SCS. This costs just S$6 for an adult or S$4 for a child (3 to 12 years old) or senior citizen for Singaporeans and PR during peak period. During off peak period, admission is free.

For all other visitors, the cost is still cheap at S$12 for adults and S$8 for children.

Other than the mirror maze, SCS launched another new exhibition about optical illusions, The Mind’s Eye, comprising more than 30 mind-boggling exhibits, promising an intriguing experience as you try hard to differentiate between perception and reality.

It’s much like the Trickeye Museum, but much cooler, cheaper and you get to learn the science behind it all. Perfect for getting children to be interested in science.

I think most of us think that SCS is just a place for little children; how wrong this perception is. During my visit over the weekend, I saw many teens visiting in groups with their friends. They were having fun and taking lots of photos and videos, just like the family crowd who were there with their little ones.

The Mind’s Eye takes just around 30 minutes to complete the full exhibition and it is directly from the main entrance on the first floor. Expect queue for the mirror maze, so be there early if you want to experience it.

Parents agree they should play primary role in inculcating moral values in children but say lack of time: Study

Parents agree they should play the main role in educating their children about moral values, according to a survey. But they also added that the lack of time with their children poses a challenge.

This is according to the latest Graciousness Survey commissioned by the Singapore Kindness Movement (SKM), which tracks experiences and perceptions of kindness and graciousness.

The study polled 3,066 respondents via face-to-face interviews over two waves – from July to August 2016 and from December 2016 to January 2017.

Those polled also recognised the need to work together with schools and student care facilities, so that there is mutual support in inculcating moral values in children.

Besides a lack of time with their children, external influences such as friends and articles that their children come across on the Internet also posed as challenges.

Over a third of parents surveyed consider such external factors as possible causes of a child’s negative behaviour, including ungraciousness.

As such, parents have expressed the need for more guidance or resources on parenting techniques, as well as additional opportunities and activities to learn together as a family.

The study also found out that Singapore residents remain generally positive about the state of graciousness and kindness here.

More Singaporeans also agree that they can and should take more ownership in promoting and fostering positive social values as opportunities to do so present themselves.

Overall state of graciousness is stable

The survey seeks to find out respondents’ perceptions about overall graciousness, courtesy, consideration and appreciation.

The results showed these to be holding steady or moderately improving year-on-year. Over the past year, more people deemed that things remained the same – that is, no clearly evident improvements or declines in overall graciousness perceptions.

General secretary of SKM, Dr William Wan said: “I am heartened to learn that Singaporeans generally remain positive about the state of kindness and graciousness in Singapore, given the prominence of some incidents that have gone viral recently.

“We need to continue to strive for kindness – both online and face-to-face – so as to make society ever better and more positive, one which we all would like to live in and belong to,” he added.

More opportunities for interaction within neighbourhoods and at work

Respondents are generally satisfied with the current state of neighbourliness, and most shared that they exchange casual greetings with their neighbours.

However, more respondents also said that they are unaware of, or uninterested in opportunities to interact more deeply with their neighbours, and that they treasure privacy at home.

On attitudes of Singaporeans and foreign residents towards each other, there is more mutual understanding and appreciation of each other’s efforts to be welcoming and to assimilate and integrate.

However result showed that the interactions with each other are mostly at work and school, and that more could be done to create opportunities for interaction beyond such institutions.

Dr Wan said: “I’m encouraged to see people continuing to carry out acts of kindness.

“I hope that we will continue to amplify this in the decisions that we make in everyday scenarios – be it interacting with our friends at school, our colleagues at work or welcoming new residents into our neighbourhoods,” he said.

6 tips on how women can protect and improve ovarian health

$

Having healthy ovaries is a cornerstone of fertility. More often than not, the factors impacting the health of ovaries can be easily overlooked.

Dr Fong Yang, a fertility specialist at Virtus Fertility Centre Singapore, said: “A woman’s fertility and reproductive health is largely dependent on the state of her ovaries. Women struggling to conceive are likely to have poor egg conditions, and will need to pay closer attention to the various factors that can improve egg health for a viable pregnancy.

“The key to enhancing the health of eggs is none other than maintaining a balanced diet and exercise regime to boost the body’s immune system,” Dr Fong added.

Virtus Fertility Centre shares a checklist and tips on improving ovarian health below:

What is the ovary-action?

Unsuccessful attempts at conceiving can be a frustrating experience for couples. It is important to evaluate one’s lifestyle habits and incorporate a well-balanced regime to improve the reproductive system.

There are many ways to stimulate the health of ovaries and improve egg quality to optimize fertility. As eggs are developing and maturing every month, maintaining a healthy state of body and mind at all times is important, especially during the months when you are actively trying for a baby. Attention to a healthy routine during this time can have a positive impact on egg quality.

Eat and live wisely

Fuel ovarian health with a nutrient-rich diet, eight glasses of purified water and exercise to stay active.

Vitamin A is a critical vitamin which helps to kick start the cell division process in the production of eggs. Foods containing vitamin A include eggs, milk, spinach, pumpkin and carrots. A word of caution, though, as vitamin A can be toxic in high doses, and one must not exceed recommended daily allowances especially when taking it in the form of supplements or pills.

While vitamin D has been touted for its benefit to bone health, a less known fact is that vitamin D plays a critical role in ovarian health by regulating the levels of anti-Mullerian hormone (AMH), a hormone that can assess a woman’s ovarian reserve. Vitamin D-containing food include salmon, mushrooms and eggs.

Sources of omega-3 include salmon, mackerel, walnuts and soybeans. Besides being heart-friendly, omega-3 fatty acids play an important role in membrane fluidity and cell health to protect against oxidative damage and promote a healthy ovary.

Kick lifestyle habits that compromise ovarian health

Smoking decreases the flow of blood and oxygen to all parts of the body including the ovaries which could lead to an increased rate of genetic damage to the eggs and heightened risks of miscarriages. Women planning to conceive are advised to curb any caffeine to no more than two cups of coffee or five cups of tea a day. Abstaining from alcohol consumption is highly encouraged.

Menstrual health

If you have been experiencing irregular menstrual cycles, increased facial and body hair growth, unexplained weight gain, or even difficulties in getting pregnant for a prolonged period of time, it is time to take action and seek professional help to keep your body in check.

One of the most common ovarian disorder that affects about 5-15% of women of reproductive age in Singapore is Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS), which affects a woman’s fertility because her ovaries contain small cysts or follicles which are not able to produce eggs capable of being fertilised.

Can I still get pregnant if I am diagnosed with PCOS?

While there is no cure for PCOS, the most common treatment is an Ovulation Induction process where the woman will be prescribed an oral medicine or a series of injections of Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) that aims to spur the growth and development of eggs to increase her chances of conception naturally or through artificial insemination.

After the medication is administered, the woman will be required to return for an ultrasound scan between the 11th to the 14th day to check if she is about to ovulate and get advice on appropriate days for sexual intercourse or artificial insemination to maximise the chances of pregnancy.

Is time on my side?

By the time a woman reaches puberty, her ovarian reserve has already depleted to about less than half of what she had at birth. A way to find out the potential number of fertile years a woman has left is to take the Ovarian Reserve Test, or the Anti-Mullerian Hormone (AMH) test. AMH is a hormone secreted by cells in developing follicles, which can be detected in a woman’s blood at any time throughout her menstrual cycle. The level of AMH serves as a good indicator of a woman’s remaining quantity of eggs.

Five Reasons to catch Cirque du Soleil’s KOOZA at Marina Bay

$

The largest theatrical producer in the world, Cirque du Soleil returns to Singapore this week, presenting KOOZA at Marina Bay. The Canadian entertainment company is famous for their combination of thrilling acrobatic performance with the art of clowning, bringing forth a modern circus entertainment experience for the whole family. DBS Bank is an official sponsor for the event.

Presented in the intimate setting of blue and yellow Big Tops, Kooza has been seen by over 7 million people around the world and is inspired by the Sanskrit word “Koza” which means “box”, “chest” or “treasure”. Kooza showcases an international cast of 50 acrobats, musicians, singers and actors from 19 different countries, performing physically astonishing feats and laugh-out-loud antics to a live soundtrack fusion of jazz, funk and Bollywood beats.

The performances are weaved together through a narrative that follows “The Innocent” who presents the child within us all, as he takes a journey of self-discovery through a kingdom of eccentric characters, electrifying thrills and out-of-the-box surprises. Presented in a colourful medley of costumes and characters, Kooza springs open like a bejeweled toy box to capture the audience’s imagination and set pulses racing.

There’s never a dull moment from start till end and here are five reasons you should head down and catch the show while it’s showing at Marina Bay in Singapore.

1.

Modern circus experience

A big top circus featuring animal performances and freak shows are things of the pass now, thanks to better understanding on animal cruelty and the humiliation faced by the human ‘freaks’ who are usually people born with birth defects or other forms of deformity.

Acrobatic performances are still being enjoyed though, as inspirations to what the human mind and body can achieve when it’s trained to perfection. The Cirque du Soleil brings you a wholesome big top circus entertainment which make circus still relevant in this modern world.

2.

Thrilling acrobatic displays

The acrobatic performances put forward in Kooza are curated from among the world’s bests.Without giving away too much of the show, highlights include a pair of daredevils running in a giant suspended twin-pendulum; a trio of contortionists who will shock you as they merge their bodies together effortlessly like water; tight-rope walkers on bicycles and many more:

I hear the audience gasping so many times and heaving huge sigh of relieves when they witness the acrobats successful complete their most thrilling stunts.

3.

Laugh till you drop

I am sure all of us have come across bad comedians and clowns. Although the really good clowns make it all seem so effortless to get the audience laughing and falling off their seats, comic timing is something which requires years of experience and training. The clowning crew at Kooza are the bests of the bests and are able to keep the mood of the audience high and happy right from the beginning till the end.

If you bought tickets for the first few rows, be prepared that you might get called on stage for some fun audience participation.

4.

You have to see at least one Cirque du Soleil in your lifetime…

and if you have already seen one previously, you would understand why you would need to catch it again. My first Cirque du Soleil experience was watching Totem in 2015, also at Marina Bay in Singapore. I got hooked after that and told myself I have to see it again if they are performing here again.

5.

Beautifully choreographed

I have seen many other acrobatic performances from my travels to different parts of the world and onboard cruise ships. Sometimes, the skills of standalone acrobats are comparable or even better than the performers at Cirque du Soleil, but the whole is greater than the sum of the parts. What’s so enjoyable about any Cirque du Soleil show is the choreography and the narrative that weaves all the performances together. There’s never a dull moment and each act is played out to milk the most thrill, suspense or laughter.

There’s a reason why they have a live band and singer for the acoustic instead of using pre-recorded sound effects – so that the music can match to the performances with perfect tempo. The attention to details is astonishing.

Cirque du Soleil’s Kooza will be showing in Singapore from now till 20 August. More details on the ticket purchases are available via SISTIC online.

The Nickelodeon Slime Cup 2017 kicked off yesterday at City Square Mall to a slimy start and I was there with my son Asher to soak in the fun. Here are some images that capture the highlights, fun and sliminess that took place throughout the day:

The Nickelodeon Slime Cup 2017 carries on today and is FREE for the public. It takes place at City Square Mall from 11am to 7pm. Asher and I have been attending the event since 2015. Check out our past years coverage in 2015 and 2016.

Since the inaugural event in 2013, the Nickelodeon Slime Cup in Singapore has seen more than 33,000 kids and their families play with nearly 30,000 litres of slime.

At the event, each child will own a Training Card which will allow them to collect a stamp upon completion of each game station. Gain a certain number of skill stamps and earn the honour of being a certified Nickelodeon Super Slime Fan, as well as the chance to bring home some slime in exclusive Slime Cup goodie bags (only for kids aged 4-14).

Some survival tips for parents who are heading down:

  • Bring an extra set of clothes to change into if your kids (and even yourselves) intend to get slimed as it can get quite messy
  • Some of the game stations are for kids above 1.2m, hence if you have kids smaller than that, check before queuing
  • Download the FREE Nickelodeon Play app (available on Android and iOS) at home so you can avoid queuing at selected game stations involving games on the app
  • Wear orange to the event to increase your chance of winning some extra prizes
  • Make sure your kids drink lots of water throughout the day as the weather gets really hot outdoor in Singapore
  • Get ready some books or entertainment material to keep your kids occupied while queuing for the games
  • Factor in about 30 minutes each to queue for each of the more popular stations
  • Go for the full 10 chops on the Training Card if you have the time as the goodie bag top-up is much better than the one for up to 8 chops

One good thing about the event taking place at a shopping mall is that you can duck into aircon comfort whenever the heat becomes unbearable. Food is also easily available, with many F&B outlets and restaurants within the mall itself. City Square Mall also has a kids targeted level at B2 which include a Toys “R” Us, kids’ apparel shops and many other kids-friendly stores.

That’s it! Have fun!

Check into an immersive experience at the new Terminal 4 in Changi Airport

The newest kid on the flying ground in Singapore will have you bedazzled.

What are we talking about? It is none other than the spanking new Terminal 4 at Changi Airport soon to be revealed.

It can handle an impressive capacity of 16 million passengers per annum alongside nine airlines operating in this terminal alone.

The next time you make your way to Changi Airport, expect to check into an immersive experience at Terminal 4 and here’s why.

Immersive wall that ignites your wanderlust

Your desire to different parts of the world only intensifies when you see this 70m x 5m long Immersive Wall. This riveting wall spans across the Central Departure Security Screening area where bags and body checks are conducted.

Long gone are the days where you feel mentally stressed as the LED display soothes your senses with 17 immersive content capsules. Each lasts for about two to four minutes, giving travellers and tourists alike a glimpse of the splendid Singapore’s skyline, ASEAN landmarks and more.

The high-definition content, totalling 50 minutes for the whole cycle is produced by Moment Factory, a Montreal-based multimedia entertainment studio specialising in creating immersive and engaging experiences.

Peranakan Love Story playing at Heritage Zone

Terminal 4 pays homage to the rich Peranakan heritage in Singapore, especially during the evolution of its culture from the 1880s to the 1950s. You will see nine panels reflecting the unique architectural styles often seen in the likes of the Katong and Chinatown areas – from Baroque to Rococo, to Peranakan and finally to Modern Deco.

While you’re admiring the cultural design of this Heritage Zone, treat your eyes to a visual feast with ‘Peranakan Love Story’. Set in 1930s Singapore, This spectacular six-minute short film of a love story is the brainchild of prominent local composer and artiste, Dick Lee.

Be held in rhapsody as you watch the short film play before on a 10m x 6m LED screen spanning two shopfront bays on the Peranakan facade of the shophouses.

The unlikely romance between two passionate musicians living next to each other stars local talents Adrian Pang, Koh Chieng Mun, Amy Cheng and Benjamin Kheng. You can even enjoy take-outs from the local F&B outlets housed within the shophouse architecture such as Curry Times, Heavenly Wang and more.

Be careful you don’t get so engrossed with the performance you miss your flight!

Petalclouds and petals everything

While it may not be common to see kinetic installations in airports, Terminal 4 takes the airport terminal experience up a notch with this moving artwork.

As the installation was inspired by orchid petals, Petalclouds hold a symmetrical shape that can be found throughout the architecture and interiors of the terminal. In total, there are six identical sculptures spanning along Central Galleria and visible to travellers from all vantage points.

Each Petalcloud consists of 16 individual petal elements that are each suspending on two motors with four wires. The wires are used to animate the movement of the petals as well as to transmit power to the lighting elements inside them.

You can even find the signature petal motifs on the ceilings at Terminal 4. The hallmark symbol is found all across the terminal, even in the shape of the bin and on the carpeted ground.

Based on just this alone, Changi Airport Terminal 4 is easily one of the most well and thoughtfully designed terminals in the world.

Insta-worthy art sculptures and seats

Les Oiseaux (The Birds) by Cedric Le Borgne (France). Location: Arrival & Departure Halls, Public Area.

This contemplative artwork of three bird sculptures made of stainless steel wires, greet passengers in the Arrival and Departure Halls. It’s hard to look past this glorious art piece, especially with its luminosity radiating from within.

Out of the three birds, one bird is perched on the ground while the other two are suspended in mid-air, soaring high. The three birds, each with a different attitude, symbolise the connection between sky and earth, between dream and reality, reflecting the poetry of daily life.

It surely isn’t a visually immersive experience without insta-worthy art sculptures and receptacles to take a photo of. There are over 1, 500 of such seats scattered across the airport terminal for you to take a respite or simply give you an excuse for some photo-taking.

You won’t believe these are seats you can actually sit on because they look so cute!

Even more more intriguingly shaped seats for you to take a photo of.

Terminal 4 has surely outdone its peer when it comes to melding elements of arts into an airport terminal experience.

Fast and Seamless Travel (FAST) at T4

Terminal 4 will also be the first terminal at Changi Airport to integrate facial recognition technology with end-to-end self-service options.

From check in, bag drop to immigration and boarding, self-service options are available for a truly fast and seamless travel. Bag drop is easily done as the platform is lowered to the passenger the trouble of lifting one’s heavy luggage.

There is even the use of facial recognition technology, which is integrated in the FAST process to authenticate the passenger’s identity.

You can be sure of the state-of-the-art technology incorporated into each check point at the new terminal as T4 now offers a fully automated departure process.

Flying from Changi Airport has never been more exciting.

T4 Open House will be running from 7 to 20 August 2017, with all 200, 000 tickets taken up.

Once operational readiness trials – currently in the final stage – have been completed, T4 operations will commence.

Boy makes rude gesture on LIVE TV National Day Parade 2017

UPDATE

The child in the photo has been confirmed by the Straits Times as a student of Henry Park Primary School.

In an interview with the Straits Times, principal Chia Soo Keng of Henry Park Primary School stated that the child in the video is “deeply apologetic” and has undergone counseling.

The principal also said that the child regrets his action and his guardians and parents are making sure he learns from this event.

Alvinology.com will update this article as more details emerge.

What happened?

On last night’s coverage of the National Day Parade, a boy in a red blazer (which was the parade costume for their performance) was shown on live television making a rude gesture using his middle finger.

The incident happened towards the end of the parade coverage, where the boy can be seen looking into the camera behind his other classmates, calmly making the gesture. The whole incident happened only for five seconds.

Video coverage of the incident

You can also take a look at the full media coverage of the NDP 2017, where the incident occurred.

In the video, you can see a child at the 2:47:53 mark on the left side looking at the camera and raising his hand in a rude gesture. His other classmates are at the forefront of the shot, and he is standing on an elevated platform compared to his peers.

Which school?

The children in that performance were mentioned to be students of Henry Park Primary school, according to the parade’s host in earlier commentary. In a story from the Straits Times, the boy has been confirmed to be a student of Henry Park Primary School on Holland Road.

A photo has surfaced, though, of a child wearing the same garb as the boy in the photo being reprimanded by two adults.

The Henry Park Primary School website has reported that some 400 of its students were slated to perform on the National Day Parade.

Netizens react

Netizens have been reacting to the little boy’s actions, with some of them being indulgent.

User Zeit on Kiasuparents’ forum thought that what the little boy did was cute and hopes that the child does not get detention on Friday.

A user named Energyi5 on the Hardwarezone forums, however, said that the child deserves a slap.

Not the only mishap

This isn’t the only blooper that’s ever happened on a National Day Parade. Here are other times when someone’s made a mistake or enacted something funny on camera for the parade.

The National Day Parade in 2015 had this beauty to thank for its controversy:

Emma Lee, a 31-year-old business woman from China stopped the show and was featured on the live broadcast at least five times thanks to her good looks and snazzy ensemble. Wearing a red dress and pearl necklace, the press were scrambling to uncover her identity two years ago and ask her what she thought of Singapore.

She runs a steel and aluminum trading business and has settled in Singapore, according to the Straits Times.

Last year, during the National Day Parade 2016 coverage, Alvinology.com noted the presence of a beautiful sign language interpreter named Neoh Yew Kim, who is now 23 years old. The hard-of-hearing deaf language instructor won netizens’ hearts and even went on to tell her story on Humans of Singapore.

Alvinology was able to find out more about her. Check out our post from last year here.

What do you think of the boy who made the rude gesture during the parade? If you were his parent, how would you feel? Let us know in the comments!

7 Trip Preparation Tips for Travelling with Seniors

$
0
0

I am going on a cruise trip to KL, Penang and Phuket with my family in September, and the group includes several elderly folks and one little boy. My parents and a few of my relatives going on the trip are seniors above 60 years old, while my son Asher is turning 6 this year.

Since I was the adult who did all the travel arrangement, here are some tips I learned when planning for this trip, and also through previous trips with my parents and son.

1. Plan Early

Image via Shutterstock

Image via Shutterstock

Unlike millennials, seniors are not really into the YOLO concept. Don’t believe me? Try telling your retired parents that you have won a pair of air tickets to Paris, but the only catch is that they have to pack now and fly off the next morning. Watch their jaws drop.

Seniors prefer to plan their trips way in advance, so they can go through every little detail again and again to make sure the itinerary is perfect. Don’t be a last minute lizard.

2. No Surprises

My parents do not like surprises or sudden changes to a planned itinerary. I believe most seniors value predictability versus freewheeling. You need not go through the full itinerary you have planned with them, but just ensure that what you tell them will happen. Otherwise, don’t mention them.

For example, try not to deviate from the road or make a wrong turn during a driving trip. You will have to bear with all the complaints and nagging on why you did not pay attention to the road, or took a wrong detour. Trust me, it’s not worth it.

3. Have Back-up Food

Image via Shutterstock

Image via Shutterstock

Seniors can get very picky with their food. One of my friend’s dad has to pack instant noodles every time they travel to western countries as he just cannot stomach ang moh food. You don’t want to be heading to Chinatown or such restaurants all the time just because your parents can only eat food from their own ethnic group.

My parents are relatively easy with food, so it’s not so bad for me. I am the picky one, preferring a low carb, fresh veggie and nuts diet. As such, I will usually pack a small bag of my own fruits and nuts. For kids, pack healthy, small snacks like apples and oat biscuits in small packaging which they can munch on whenever they have hunger pangs.

4. Rent Travel Wi-Fi routers to share

The last thing you want is for your parents to get lost in a strange land with no way to communicate with them. Hence, renting a few Travel Wi-Fi routers to share will be very useful. This will help the group to get Wi-Fi and to communicate with each other using online messaging services like WhatsApp, WeChat and Line.

Each travel Wi-Fi router typically can connect up to 5 devices.

For ease of rental, if you are travelling out from Singapore, Changi Recommends has counters at all the terminals at Changi Airport with Wi-Fi routers for rent for most of the common travel destinations.

5. Be Prepared for Medical Emergencies

At the very basic, ensure you bring ample supply of the usual lifesavers like seasick pills, poh chai pills for upset tummies, charcoal pills, Panadol, plasters and such.

Going one step further, find out what are the contact details for the hospital in the country or city that you are visiting, and how you can get help if there is an unexpected medical emergency. If you are travelling with a tour guide, inform your tour guide if anyone you are travelling with has any medical condition which needs special attention.

6. Buy Travel Insurances

The cruise ship which we are going on in September, Royal Caribbean’s Mariner of the Seas, features adventure sports like rock climbing among many other activities. If the seniors and young ones you are travelling with are looking to engage in such activities, make sure you get travel insurance for them.

AXA’s travel insurance plans are competitively priced and the purchasing experience on their website is pretty seamless, intuitive and convenient. Try it out yourself.

Just fill in your travel dates, number of adults/children you are travelling with, region you are travelling to, type of cover (single or multi-trip), and promo code (if you have one) and you can get an instant quote.

The fine print for the coverage are then provided for those who are more details-oriented. If you just need a general overview, AXA’s travel insurance plans have 3 key benefits that differentiate it from other brands:

  • Adventure Sports Cover
  • Personal Accident Cover Starts before Trip
  • 24-hour Emergency Medical Assistance

7. Keep Calm and Carry On

Image via Metro.co.uk

Image via Metro.co.uk

We come to the last and most important tip – Do not ever lose your cool and yell at your parents or kid. This will quickly sour the whole travelling experience, making the holiday more painful than enjoyable.

Patience is the key. Learn from Queen Elizabeth. Before you explode, take a deep breath, count to ten, and wait for the anger to dissipate.

Then, keep calm and carry on.

This post is brought to you by AXA, but all thoughts and opinions are the writer’s own.

Review: LG Hom-Bot Square Turbo+ literally looks over your home and cleaning

$

While you may have heard of a robotic vacuum cleaner, one that also watches over your home is indeed a rare gem.

Well, the latest Hom-Bot Square Turbo+ from LG will arrest your attention with a wide spectrum of capabilities.

It has all you need in a vacuum cleaner sans the noise and hassle. If you’re thinking of switching out the current vacuum cleaner you have, here’s why you should do so – in a heartbeat.

HomeView doubles as home surveillance

One impressive feature of this smart robotic vacuum cleaner lies in its HomeView capability. You are able to see what is happening inside your home from either your Android smartphone or iPhone, via the mounted camera.

LG HomBot Square has Triple Eye 3.0™, allowing it to watch over your home.

The upgraded Triple Eye 3.0™ touts of a front camera that activates as a securing camera. While the upper camera maps out the house for cleaning even in low light condition, the lower camera scans the pattern of the floor. No stone is left unturned as the Hom-Bot Square Turbo+ can clean dark areas, even those under the furniture.

This certainly gives parents with young children or elderly parents at home a piece of mind, particularly with real-time monitoring function. You can also easily check on the situation at home from work or wherever you are – so long you are connected to the network.

The Hom-Bot vacuum cleaner is able to return to the Home charging station on its own, with a speaking guidance in up to 7 languages.

Besides, the Hom-Bot Square Turbo+ alerts you if there is any movement in your home in the Home Guard mode. Any time there is a movement detected within its camera view, it sends the image to your phone.

Now you can rest at ease knowing that your loved ones are safe while you are out at work.

Your trusty cleaning guru even when no one’s home

These longer side brushes ensure effective corner cleaning, even the tough corners.

As you zip around town running your errands, you can schedule cleaning at home easily through an application. Despite the absence of supervision, the vacuum cleaner can gauge how far the obstacles are with.

The digital bumpers the Hom-Bot is equipped with are superior to conventional bumpers, thus minimising collision. Moreover, in the learning mode, it remembers locations of cliffs and obstacles during and after cleaning while adjusting speed and sensor sensitivity to suit the situation.

Put shortly, you can entrust the cleaning in your home into the safe hands of LG Hom-Bot Square Turbo+ without worrying that your furniture will be knocked over.

What’s more, the Hom-Bot comes with a Mapping Resume Function, which remembers the areas it has cleaned before so the same places are not repeated. clean the same areas repeatedly.

You can even have a full live view and control the Hom-Bot manually through a joystick on screen (directional control and button to navigate the Hom-Bot forward).

If not, the hands-free way would be to kick back and relax while your handy Hom-Bot does the cleaning, at just the push of a button.

Various cleaning modes to suit your preference

Depending on your preferences, you can now take your pick between ‘cell-by-cell’, ‘zig-zag’ and ‘spiral’ modes for cleaning. If you opt for ‘cell-by-cell’, the robotic cleaner will complete cleaning for a cell before it moves on to the next.

As for ‘zig-zag’ mode, the Hom-Bot navigates in a zig-zag manner unless it faces an obstruction. Even when an object stands in its way, the smart vacuum cleaner is able to detect and manoeuvre around it. For thorough spot cleaning, the ‘spiral’ mode can do that perfectly well.

It even comes with a brush cleaner to get rid of the tough dirt.

Hom-Bot Square Turbo+ also boasts of powerful turbo cleaning yet functions quietly and at low noise – 60dB(A).

As compared to ordinary Ni-MH battery, the robotic vacuum cleaner uses long lasting lithium polymer battery that has a longer cycle life. Besides, there is no memory effect so the battery life for the vacuum cleaner can run longer.

Paying attention to the details

The Easy Out dustbin even comes with a handy brush for optimal cleaning or to get any stubborn dirt out of the way.

In essence, the Hom-Bot goes way beyond than a simple vacuum cleaner as much attention is paid to even the tiniest of details.

When it comes to the ergonomic design of this vacuum cleaner, even the most intricate aspects matter.  The dust bin is designed such that it is much more handy, relative to other slide-out type dust bins.

The Easy Out dustbin is also easily detached from the vacuum cleaner for ease and convenience.

In comparison to other types of motor, the Smart Inverter Motor used in this vacuum cleaner has lesser friction. The exceptional durability and battery performance are certainly the last of your concerns, especially with the 10 years’ parts warranty.

Smart Ecosystem with LG Smart ThinQ™

Apart from the compelling features of this smart vacuum cleaner, we are amazed by the ease of controlling the Hom-Bot Square through Smart ThinQ™.

Further, this application is compatible with both Android and iOS software – Tag On feature is only applicable for the former due to its ability to use Near Field Communication (NFC). Android users can just tap their smartphones on top of the Hom-Bot and further instructions will be given to pair the devices.

As for iPhone users, they will have to connect to the Hom-Bot WiFi with the given network ID and password before it is paired with the smart vacuum cleaner.

Through this smart platform, you are able to manage not only your Hom-Bot Square Turbo+ but also your other LG appliances in a systematic fashion; and within a smart ecosystem.

Regardless of its surveillance or cleaning capabilities, the Hom-Bot Square VR66820VMNC is unrivalled in its market.

It is little wonder this smart robotic vacuum cleaner is seen as a bellwether for future vacuum cleaners. Won’t you say so?

Find out more about this game-changing vacuum cleaner Hom-Bot Square VR66820VMNC here.

Singapore kid planks in the most dangerous place–and he isn’t the only one!

If you’ve been around the internet for a while, you’ll know that planking was a crazy thing a few years ago. It was so crazy that even celebrities did it whenever their fans would ask them.

The craziest thing that’s ever happened? Someone died.

But just for the crowd who wasn’t around a few years ago to catch the planking craze in social media (consider yourself lucky), planking is basically laying facedown on a surface in a prone position, arms and legs tucked neatly in, to resemble (your guess it) a plank!

While harmless in theory, someone has already died from the meme.

One Singaporean kid may have taken the prank almost too far. Take a look:

Did you just see a child planking in the middle of the road? Why, yes you did. And he only got up when a vehicle approached. In case you were wondering, here is the original source of the video on Instagram:

If any parents are reading this, then maybe a gentle reminder for children not to plank in dangerous places is in order.

But don’t think that Singaporean kids have the monopoly on the dangerous instances of planking. Here are some other times when planking turned out quite the life-risking practice.

Planking out in the open is the most dangerous type, right? Well, planking across your kitchen over a countertop and a stove could be much worse! After all, this African-American woman had to deal with hitting her head on the stove and the oven.

Why would you want to plank across a walkalator? What do these people do all day aside from think up these crazy schemes to get internet-famous? While successful with his planking, this person sure had a nasty fall towards the end.

Here’s another genius at planking, who was able to successfully achieve the “plank” for a few seconds and even get down from the door–until she got her fingers stuck in the frame! Ouch, that must have hurt and would make the internet notoriety completely not worth the pain.

Where did planking start anyway?

Since the practice has been highly documented but viral from the start, the British Broadcasting Agency (BBC) says that there are two possible origins of this internet meme.

One possible origin is in Somerset, England in 2000. Two men called it the “lying down game” back then, where they would lie in the planking position in various public locations because it was funny.

Another possible start to this trend is in Australia, eight years later where the term “planking” was first used. Usually happening on dance floors and bars, people tried to top each other with the most unusual places to plank since then.

With the video of the Singaporean child above, this trend could be coming back in a dangerous manner. Make sure your kids know when to ride an internet trend and when to just sit back and let it die down.

Why not send food to the less fortunate while you’re ordering dinner for your family?

Starting today, Singaporeans will be able to donate to charity at the click of a button via Deliveroo as part of the brand’s “Deliver-Lah” celebrations during National month in Singapore.

Deliveroo has partnered with local soup kitchen, Willing Hearts, to create an online pop-up “restaurant” on the app where consumers can easily donate a meal to someone less fortunate.

How does it work?

By simply logging in to the app or website and searching for the Willing Hearts “restaurant,” you can donate in denominations of $5, $10, $15 and $20 in exactly the same way you add a dish to a regular Deliveroo order. Doing a good deed has never been easier!

From now until 31 August, all donations raised on the app will benefit Willing Hearts and help them continue to operate their soup kitchen that prepares, cooks and distributes around 5,000 meals daily to over 40 locations islandwide, including the elderly, disabled, poverty-stricken families and migrant workers.

To learn more about Willing Hearts, visit their website. You may find other ways to help out this National month.
